Hey Productivity Community,
Are you constantly finding yourself in a space where you feel that it’s hard to focus? Many of us struggle with procrastination, distractions, or simply feeling unmotivated. I have a major tip that has helped me stay productive and on task on multiple occasions. Which is body doubling.
What is Body Doubling?
Body doubling is a productivity technique that involves working with another person to complete tasks Body doubling is the practice of working alongside another person to increase focus and accountability. The idea is simple: having someone present, whether in person or virtually, creates a sense of shared energy and accountability that makes it easier to get things done.
Think of it as having a "study buddy" for everyday tasks. Whether you’re tackling work projects, organizing your space, or even folding laundry, a body double can help you stay on track.
Some say that even just having someone in the room, without necessarily doing the same task, can be helpful. For example, someone might have a friend come over to sit with them while they read a book or do chores. The social arrangement can induce a dopamine release, which can help with focus.
How does it work?
The presence of another person helps reduce feelings of isolation and encourages you to stay engaged. Even if the other person isn’t actively participating in your task, their presence can:
Provide a sense of accountability – Knowing someone is there can motivate you to keep going.
Help with structure – Setting specific times to work with a body double creates a routine.
Reduce overwhelm – Breaking down tasks into smaller steps becomes easier when someone is there to support you.
Who Benefits from Body Doubling?
Honestly? Everyone! But body doubling is especially helpful for:
People with ADHD or executive dysfunction who need that extra nudge.
Remote workers who miss the vibe of having coworkers around.
Students needing a study partner.
Anyone feeling stuck or unmotivated to start boring or intimidating tasks.
How to Incorporate Body Doubling into Your Routine
If this sounds like something you’d like to try, here’s how you can make it happen:
Team up with a friend or coworker
Pick a time to work on your own tasks together. You don’t have to do the same thing—just knowing someone else is working too can help.
Join virtual coworking sessions
Apps like Focusmate or virtual coworking spaces on Zoom are great for this. You’ll find other people looking for the same boost.
Use accountability tools
There are apps that can pair you with a buddy or a community for shared work sessions.
Hire a pro if needed
Coaches, tutors, or professional organizers can act as a body double to help you stay on track.
Set goals beforehand
Take a minute to jot down what you want to achieve during your session. Having a plan keeps you focused and lets you see your progress.
My Experience with Body Doubling
Many times, I use body doubling when I’m brainstorming or trying to crank out a lot of projects, even when it’s just planning them. I’ve sat on FaceTime with my friends before, and even regular phone calls, just to get that sense of having someone next to me while I work. I’ve been able to knock out so much work, get ahead, and even collaborate on ideas when the opportunity arose.
Here’s another tip that might surprise you: sometimes I use YouTube videos as a way to feel comforted or to simulate body doubling. Twitch streams work too, especially when I’m up late working. Just hearing someone actively talking and alert, like I am, has been a big help. So, if you can’t body double with a friend or coworker, try finding a similar vibe through videos or streams—it’s surprisingly effective!
A Few Tips for Success
Pick the right partner – Someone who’s supportive and focused makes all the difference.
Time it right – Work sessions between 30-90 minutes are the sweet spot for most people.
Share your goals – Let your buddy know what you’re working on to keep you accountable.
Limit distractions – Create a quiet, focused space so you both can stay on track.
Give Body Doubling a Try
Body doubling isn’t just a productivity hack—it’s also a way to feel connected and supported. Whether you’re tackling a big project or just trying to clean your kitchen, having someone there makes all the difference.
